Day 1: Baylor & Georgia Tech Advance to Division Championship

BIMINI, Bahamas – Baylor and Georgia Tech both won their opening games of the 2017 Junkanoo Jam at Resorts World Bimini women’s basketball tournament. On Thanksgiving Day, Baylor blitzed Missouri State from the opening tip and cruised to a 100-58 win. Later that day, Georgia Tech used a strong fourth quarter performance to down Pennsylvania. Baylor and Georgia Tech are slated to meet in the championship of the Junkanoo Division on Saturday, November 25.

In the opening game of the 2017 tournament and the Junkanoo Division, the eight ranked Baylor Lady Bears rolled to a 100-58 win over the Missouri State Lady Bears. At the half Baylor lead 58-25 and didn’t slow down in the second half. The front court of Baylor proved to be too big and too skilled, as Kalani Brown and Lauren Cox lead the way with 20 and 18 points respectively. Baylor assisted on an impressive 27 of their 41 field goals.

In the bottom of the Junkanoo Division bracket, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets faced off against the Quakers of Pennsylvania. Georgia Tech lead by one at the break, 36-35, behind a 15-point performance from Zaire O’Neil. The game remained close for much of the second half until a fourth quarter run gave the Yellow Jackets a 69-55 win. The Yellow Jackets were led by Elo Edeferioka and Francesca Pan each with 17 points in the game.

All eight teams in the 2017 Junkanoo Jam field will gather for Thanksgiving dinner this evening at 7 p.m. Tournament play resumes tomorrow with three games. Tulane will face Iowa State in the opening game of the Bimini Division at 3 p.m. followed by San Diego Stat and Central Michigan ay 5:15 p.m. in the final game tomorrow Missouri State will play Penn in the game for third and fourth place of the Junkanoo Division at 7:45 p.m.
